If you usually fall asleep without plugging your phone in to charge, you may be able to schedule it to turn off automatically.
Did you know that many modern Android devices allow you to schedule your phone to shut down automatically? This allows you to decide in advance when your phone shuts off.
It can be useful in many scenarios. For example, let’s say you often forget to charge your phone overnight. By setting it to shut off automatically, you can conserve power and ensure your phone is not dead when you rush out to work in the morning. Read on to learn how to use this feature.
Confirm the Feature Exists on Your Device

Some Androids offer automatic power scheduling. Others, such as modern Samsung devices, do not.
Not all Android phones have an automatic power off feature. It depends on the manufacturer. Some manufacturers include it, others do not.
For example, my Samsung Galaxy A16 does not offer that feature. On the other hand, my Vivo y27s does.
Older Samsung phones may have that feature, but in Samsung One UI, you only have the option to set an automatic restart, not an automatic power off.
The best way to find out if your phone offers that feature is to open Settings and use the search bar to search for terms such as:
- Automatic power
- Automatic shut down
- Schedule power
- Scheduled power
- Automation
- Scheduling
You can also consult the phone’s user manual or contact the manufacturer for assistance.
You can also manually search through your settings to see if you find the option. It will usually be found under the Battery, Accessibility, Task Timer, or Device Management settings. For example, on my phone, it’s found under Settings > Shortcuts & Accessibility > Task Timer > Scheduled Power On/Off.
Set the Automatic Power-Off Time (and Days)
Once you have identified if your device supports power scheduling and where the controls are located, the next step is to choose the time and days you want your phone to power off. You can first choose a time (such as 1 AM) and then decide which days you want it to recur on.
For example, you can exclude Fridays and Saturdays if you are usually out partying on weekends.
Remember, the settings can vary slightly, depending on your manufacturer.
Set Automatic Power-On Time (Optional)

If you are relying on your phone’s alarm to wake up, make sure to schedule it to turn on automatically beforehand.
You may also want to consider setting an automatic power-on time. Many phones allow you to set both automatic power off times and power on times. Again, this may vary based on your manufacturer.
You can set an automatic power on in the same manner as you set an automatic power off. This is useful as well. For example, some phones can take a few long minutes to start up. This can be annoying if you are rushing out of the house in the morning and need to call an Uber quickly.
Or, perhaps you use your phone’s alarm clock to wake you up. If the phone is off, it obviously won’t ring. You can set your phone to turn on automatically before your alarm is set to ring to ensure you don’t oversleep.
Verify and Test the Schedule
Before you rely on your phone to turn off and on automatically, it’s worth running a quick test to verify that everything is working.
Set the phone to turn off 5 minutes in the future, for example, and then to turn on again in 10 minutes. Make sure that it turns off and on as scheduled. If it does, you are all good to go.
Troubleshoot Missing Options
If you can’t find the option on your phone, it’s likely not available. Not all manufacturers offer this option.
There may be some alternatives, however. For example, you may be able to schedule Do Not Disturb or a Focus mode to turn on at a specific time. This, at least, can help you avoid annoying overnight calls and vibrations and help conserve the battery.
Another option may be to use an app that locks your phone or certain apps to help reduce your overall screen time usage. This could be a good alternative if your main goal is simply to avoid excessive screen time usage.
Conclusion
Unfortunately, not all phones offer an automatic shutdown option. However, many Android phones do. It’s a great way to conserve energy and is particularly useful if you tend to fall asleep at night without plugging your phone in to charge.
