Samsung Prepping Gaming-Dedicated Smartphone for Next Year

July 26, 2018, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

We have seen mobile industry welcoming gaming-dedicated phones every once in a while. The Nokia N-Gage, Sony Xperia Play etc. are examples from the past. But step in to the modern world and mobile gaming, or more specifically smartphone gaming, has become much more serious than ever, thanks to the arrival of games like Fortnite, PUBG etc.

It’s with this vision that companies like Razer and Xiaomi (Black Shark) has launched smartphones dedicated for gaming. Now, it appears like it’s the turn of market leaders Samsung to step in to the space.

Popular tipster @MMDDJ has tipped through his Twitter account that Samsung is working upon a new smartphone that would be gaming-oriented. No additional details were revealed, but the timing of the news is what generates interest.

Just a week ago, WSJ had reported that the South Korean manufacturers were prepping up a foldable smartphone that would be focusing on gaming aspect along with the rest.  It needs to be seen whether these phones are the same after all, but what’s almost certain is that Samsung will have a gaming-smartphone launched by next year, probably right in the first quarter.

Given the hardware demands of modern Android games, Samsung would have to max out the specifications, and this would make the device stand on par with the company’s flagship series. It might not be a surprise even if the device packs more than the current flagships, as Samsung would be competing with the likes of the Razer Phone that features a 120Hz display and Black Shark that has got additional cooling system.

It won’t be easy for Samsung to create a balance between its flagship and the gaming demands. But that leads us to another assumption that Samsung could pitch the device to a lower segment, to cater the not-so-demanding games in the Android eco-system. Be it either way, it’s good to see Samsung expanding its portfolio in a completely different direction.
