Raspberry celebrated Pi day with the launch of its upgraded model, the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. Despite bearing closer resemblance with the predecessor, the Pi 3 Model B+ comes upgraded with better power, making it the fastest miniature PC in the lineup.

The Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ features the same CPU that was used in the Pi 3, i.e. the Broadcom BCM2837B0 processor. However, the new model features an improvement in the clock speed of the processor, with the B+ featuring a speed of 1.4 GHz.

To recall, the original Pi 3 had only 1.2 GHz speed to its credit. Raspberry has given credits to the improved power integrity and thermal design for this noticeable upgrade. In effect, the new version will show an improvement of up to 15% in performance.

There’s also the new Cyprus chip which has helped the device improve its networking speeds. Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ now offers dual-band WLAN support at 2.4GHz and 5GHz speeds alongside offering gigabit Ethernet over USB 2.0. The latter can support speeds of up to 300Mbps. In addition, the connectivity is also bolstered by Bluetooth 4.2 and Bluetooth Low Energy.

The latest model also offers Power Over Ethernet (POE)), which although remains to be officially supported as of now. The Raspberry Pi Foundation remains dedicated to launch its own POE HAT that can be made use of in the near future.

Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ remains unaltered if comparing the remaining specifications with the predecessor. The device features four USB 2.0 ports, a 40-pin GPIO header, one full size HDMI port along with display and camera ports. Composite video ports are stereo output have also been added similar to the Raspberry Pi 3 device.

Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ will be available in the same size as that of the predecessor. The prices have also been kept unaltered, with the new version costing $35 a piece with the suppliers.
