Facebook Revives Instant Games; Now Open to Developers

March 17, 2018, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Facebook has introduced Instant Games for messenger over a year ago. Ever since, we haven’t heard of much development with it. The reason was that Facebook was testing the service in beta all these time. Now with over a year of testing, Facebook has decided that it’s time to expand the feature.

The company has now announced that its Instant Games feature is now made open by rolling it out for developers. Any developer can now get access to the Instant Game platform to design and run games in Messenger or News Feed within Facebook, both on the desktop and mobile platform.

Instant Games offers HTML5-based gaming that cuts down the snags of conventional flash and plug-in based gaming like slow load times and crashes. Games developed will be available under the game controller icon in Messenger. Apart from that, Facebook will also introduce a dedicated bookmark for players to carry on from where they left.

Instant Games is also incorporating another big development by letting developers monetize their game. This would be facilitated by means of in-game ads and video interstitials. Developers will also be given a boost by letting them create games using the already trialed engines rather than building the games from scratches.

Facebook’s Instant Games won’t be coming out as a replacement for the conventional web-limited gaming. However, it will still be of significance considering that it gives Facebook more space to penetrate with its ads. Facebook is also considering the introduction of in-game purchases at a later point of time.
