Snapchat Contextual Chats to Make it Go Beyond Photo Hosting

October 11, 2017, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Snapchat started as a mere photo-sharing app for the teens. But its instant growth beyond age barriers is slowly transforming the app into much more than just a photo hosting platform. As a result, the ephemeral texting app is now receiving additional functions that would sure lift it as a more useful app in our daily lives.

This is being achieved with the introduction of Contextual Texts, a card-based feature that will provide more information with snaps uploaded inside the app. But that doesn’t mean Contextual Texts will be present everywhere. They will be appearing only for those snaps uploaded publicly, or those stories that feature venue-specific Geofilters.

Contextual Texts can be accessed by simply swiping across a post, and this will initially pull out the card containing basic details like location, rating and reviews.

More details can be viewed by simply swiping up again, and this will bring out a host of other links and details including directions, operating hours, phone numbers, ride hailing options and more. Apart from that, Contextual Texts will also be linked with services from those tied up with Snapchat like TripAdvisor, Foursquare, OpenTable, Uber, Lyft and more.

It might appear like a small addition for normal users, but for Snapchat, it’s the biggest step it has taken in transforming its app into something that truly reflects the worth of the parent company. Whether or not the feature will be a hit is something that will depend on other factors. But sure, it is the stepping stone for the app to build on from here.
