Corning Unveils Gorilla 5, the Savior of Smartphones from Great Falls

Corning is up again with a bit of tweaks here and there with the chemical mixture. The company has now revealed their latest smartphone display protection glass that now proves to be superior above the rest by a great margin.

Corning Gorilla Glass 5, according to the company, is designed to provide added support for your smartphone displays, and can handle your display without any damage even when being dropped from heights of up to 1.6 meters (5 feet, 2 inches). Gorilla Glass 5 can survive up to 80 % of the time when dropped from this height, says the company.

The measurement can be approximated to an average height of human shoulder, which is what the company desired with the production of its new glass. Corning has revealed that it wanted its new glass to offer protection for drops occurring between waist-shoulder heights. Internal studies have shown that nearly two-third of the drops occur in between this height measurement.

With this, Corning has also raised the previous level of protection in Gorilla 4, which was meant to protect devices usually in drops that occur from pocket level or below. Corning says that its new glass offers nearly four times better resistance to drops than regular, unstrenghtened glass.

The data provided by Corning were based on the tests conducted with .6 mm Gorilla 5 glasses. However, they also offer Gorilla Glass variants of up to .4 mm, which means that the result could vary according to the device and the type of Gorilla Glass 5 used in it when it comes out to the market.

Corning’s new protection glass will be arriving on devices this fall. The company hasn’t given out the names of any device that would be housing the protection.
