Apple iPhone 5 Not Coming on T-Mobile Next Month

September 27, 2011, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

The iPhone 5 is tempting, isn’t it? But if you want the next gen Apple device on T-Mobile, it’s sadly not happening any time soon.

Going by what T-Mobile USA’s CMO and EVP Cole Brodman says, the Apple iPhone 5 will not be available on the carrier when it launches in October. Disappointing, huh?

Brodman, at the Giga OM Mobilize conference, has been quoted as saying that the ball is in Apple’s court and the company would love to have the iPhone 5 whenever Apple makes that available. T-Mobile seems to be waiting for that elusive phone call.

T-Mobile, in the meanwhile, is banking on Android these days. A cool 75 percent of the devices sold by the company are smartphones and 90 percent of them are powered by Android.

A number of devices on T-Mobile’s recently upgraded 42 Mbps network have been shown the light at the meet. Among them are the Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Amaze 4G, the first phones to make use of the network upgrade.

T-Mobile has ten million smartphones in the marketplace, of which 15 percent are 4G devices. But then, they already form around half the company’s data traffic. Brodman also made it known that video chat, Netflix and other mobile video platforms are fueling the demand for 4G. Half of the 4G data traffic is spurred by video.

On the proposed acquisition of T-Mobile by AT&T and the opposition by the Department of Justice, Brodman expressed optimism, saying that the company still expects it to happen. But then, there is a possibility that it might not happen.

All said, it seems customers win either way, according to Brodman. They will not have to share T-Mobile infrastructure updates with AT&T customers. Are you a T-Mobile fan?  What do you feel about Brodman’s thoughts?
