Android-powered LG GW620 Appears in Pictures

October 29, 2009, By Thomas Antony

Every news site I turn to this week, its Android this, Android that, Android PWNS, Android is GOD .. you get the idea. Well it seems it hasn’t stopped. LG just put up a mini-site for their first contribution to the Android Army , the LG GW620.

The website is still under construction. The “Download Media Release” link goes to some test pdf file containing the text “This is a test pdf file”. The press release itself, that was posted on October 26th, begins very politely as “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer …. ” and goes on to say a lot of stuff, which ( saying by the pictures given beside it ) apparently has something to do with the phone, but I can’t make head or tail out of it.

But there is some pretty good data on the site, including some pretty good stock photos, a couple of video demos, and the whole user manual and spec sheet ( which fortunately don’t point to “test” pdf files ). It has got some pretty neat specs. More details, photos and videos below the cut.

The LG GW620 goes “the Way of the Droid”, ( well actually it should be the “way of the G1″, but Droid is more popular nowadays anyway) or whatever you call it, and has a full 5-line QWERTY slideout keyboard, which according to the demo, will enable you to get 620 strokes in a second. The display is a 3.0” HVGA Resistive touch LCD and will show off LG’s own S-Class UI spicing up Android’s look. It will be running the 1.5 “Cupcake” version of android and will have, along with the new UI, LG’s SNS Manager ( SNS = Social Networking Service ) which integrates Facebook, Twitter and other such networks into the Contacts app along with Facial recognition that can spot people in photos and link them to their contacts entry.

It terms of connectivity, it will support quad-band GSM and dual-band UMTS along with WiFi and Bluetooth support. It will have either 2GB or 4GB of internal storage, with a microSD card slot for expansion , and a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash to help you fill all that storage. The battery will offer 700 hours of standby time without 3G and 8.1 hours of talktime, which is pretty good.  All this, is packed into a box, measuring 109 x 54.5 x 15.9 mm and weighing 139g.

LG had previously announced the device would be available in “select European markets” before the end of 2009. Hmm, I wonder what those markets are, it would certainly be somewhere where “Lorem ipsum” means good smartphone or something like that. Ok, now I will stop my bad jokes and you can look at some of the cool photos and videos of the LG GW620.

Or once they get it up and running properly, you can check out the LG GW620 Minisite.
