Solid State Storage is the future in storage technology. It is already becoming very common in the high-end computer enthusiast desktops and laptops. Prices per GB are dropping every day and new faster and higher capacity models keep coming. The latest contendor is SanDisk with their new G3 SSD which is supposed to be a real screamer when it comes to speed. It will be available in both 60GB and 120 GB capacities and is supposed to double the speed of a typical 7,200 rpm HDD, with read speeds of upto 220 MB/s and write speeds of upto 120 Mb/s.
More details below the cut.

A lot of really cool stuff was announced this year at the CES. In the middle of all the hype caused by the big guys, its quite easy to miss some rather cool products. Kingston’s new offering may be such a case. They have introduced their new SSDNow V+ 30GB Solid State Drives at a great price making it a very good option for a fast OS drive.

We recently got a glimpse at Google’s new upcoming Chrome operating sysem that apparently runs “on the cloud” and hence will require much less in terms of processing power. Hence it is obviously a good choice for low power systems such as netbooks. Now according to IBTimes, the official specsheet of such a device is now out.

The netbook supposedly is powered by an ARM-based CPU and also packs nVidia’s Tegra chipset for graphics muscle. The ARM chip reportedly consumes lesser power than the more popular Intel Atom CPU.

The So SuperSpeed Hard Drives (HDDs), which have been much anticipated from the house of Dane-Elec, will hit the US mart on December 11, 2009. The new series of USB 3.0 external drives will come loaded with storage options ranging from 500 GB to 2 TB. The series will also include the world’s first USB 3.0 Solid State Drive (SSD), which would have the capability of true data transfer speeds of up to 250MB per second.

The data transfer speeds of up to 250MBps would, in fact, be close to 10 times the rate available in current USB 2.0 devices. To be available in 2.5 or 3.5-inches formats for laptops and desktop computers, the new series of external drives will support the upcoming USB 3.0 standard, Dane-Elec said.

Corsair was not just content with the 32 to 128GB Extreme Series SSD drives and it has therefore expanded the range with a new introduction-Corsair Extreme SSD X256 that offers 256GB of storage. Corsair already has a 256GB variant in the form of the P256 SSD which is an ARM Chip with enhanced cache.

With another 256 GB SSD option being offered, Corsair is in the all conquering mood. The difference though is that this Extreme Series variant sacrifices a bit of speed and is available for a cheaper price as compared to the P256.

The low cost SSD options sound like a jewel in the desert for there aren’t many that are available at affordable prices. You normally have to prepare yourself to spend a bit extra to posses a handy one but, Intel is out there to revert the trend. Thanks to the just out NM X25 SSD range that brings you the the pleasure of a brand tag at an affordable price.

With the big hype behind SSD storage devices, the folks from PhotoFast decided it’s time to introduce ourselves with their new G-Monster PCIe SSD. Fast as hell at 750 MB/s for reads and 700 MB/s for writes, the new PCIe-based SSD solution packs two SSDs in RAID0 mode (hence the great speed) and is going to be available from 256GB to a whopping 1TB. Perfectly compatible with Windows XP or Vista, we can’t but be happy that technology is going forward, but seriously, that thing smells like an expensive product. Too bad we don’t have a price yet. Storage Vision 2009 saw the unveiling of what many hardware fanatics would consider as dear sweet news. Samsung has launched their new 100GB SSD – Samsung SS805.
The 2.5-inch SSD is not just highly efficient but also conserves on leads of energy. Both environmentally and economically speaking, the SS805 is a boon for the industries.
The 100GB SSD offers for IOPS that is 10 times faster than the fastest 15K rpm SAS HDD available today in the market. Apart from the sizzling increase in pace that it offers, the SS805 consumes only 1.9 watts of power in active mode and 0.6 watts in idle mode.
Comparing this with the normal power consumption which is measure in at 8 to 15 watts in active mode and 1 to 2 watts in idle mode consumed by typical 15K HDDs, this one is a complete power saver.
The SS805 reads data sequentially at 230 MB/s and writes sequentially at 180 MB/s with random speeds of 25K and 6K respectively. In every sense of the word, the Samsung SS805 is a huge step up in terms of the SSD options available today. [samsung]

If what SanDisk announced today turns out to be real, there will be more and more SSD (Solid State Drives) buyers in the next couple of years.
Their new ExtremeFFS (Flash File System) technology, is a new file system that will use page-based methods that promise to deliver “100 times faster” SSD write speeds. Exactly, the new system will not tie data to its physical space, like we’ve been used so far.
SanDisk is confident that their technology breakthrough will make SSD a widespread solution for PCs and if you count the fact that Windows 7 is going to be optimized for SSD, I think these guys will fill their pockets in the near future.
