It seems like almost every carrier out there with newer Android phones are preparing to roll out Android 2.1 updates on their networks. According to AndroidCentral, an update for the Sprint HTC Hero and Samsung Moment can be expected “within weeks”. The news came along with Sprint’s announcement about the pending availability of the Nexus One on their network.

Everyone who has an HTC Hero and has been itching to “officially” get the latest Android flavor on their phones, can breathe a bit easier now as leaked documents from HTC say that they will start pushing out the Android 2.1 updates by April 2nd. Earlier announcements from HTC at the MWC 2010 had placed the release date in February or March, which seems to have been postponed now. Now, starting on April 2nd, HTC will start pushing out the new version of Android to the unlocked versions of HTC Hero and later on to the carrier-specific versions.

There were predictions about the Sprint HTC Hero getting an Android 2.1 update in March and with this Twitter tweet, we’ve come to realize that the Sprint subscribers will have to wait till April or May this year. Other than the HTC Hero, it will be the Samsung Moment which is slated to get lucky while the ones using Motorola Cliq still have to keep refreshing the Sprint Twitter account in anticipation.

Another handset that will switch to Android 2.1 will be the Droid Eris which means that Sprint will have three smartphones running Android 2.1 in Q2 2010.

HTC has no plans to disappoint its admirers who’ve long been waiting for some stunning smartphones and therefore the next member revealed at the MWC 2010 is the HTC Legend, the official successor to the popular HTC Hero. Following the pattern of other HTC phones outed from the event, HTC Legend also embraces an upgraded Sense UI blessed with Friend Stream widget, a tool that aggregates friends status updates across a number of services.

Just like the HTC Desire, HTC will first sell the Android 2.1 laden handset through Vodafone and direct dealers in Europe in Q2 2010 while the North Americans will have to wait in anticipation. Nonetheless, HTC Legend is a smartphone worth waiting for with an updated 3.2-inch AMOLED display which retains the HVGA resolution.

The much hyped and rumored HTC Legend has finally arrived.
A successor to the HTC Hero that the company has introduced last year, the new Legend has been confirmed to run Android 2.1, to feature a 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen (320 X 480 HVGA resolutions), 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, HTC Sense UI and a rather stylish brushed aluminum body that adds an optical trackball.
Other specs include Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and HSPA/WCDMA support, GPS, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g) and Bluetooth 2.1, a digital compass, standard microUSB or a 3.5 mm stereo audio jack, but for the full details hit the break.

Well, the header says it all but what it does not reveal is that the Android 2.1 goodness may not arrive in the US at the moment though exporting the ROM is always a smart move in such cases. As much as we do not understand all Android running devices not getting the 2.1 update collectivity, we’ve loved to hear that the Android 2.1 update is finally ready for the HTC Hero and Motorola Cliq. Nexus One and the Droid were popular names with Android 2.1 intact but that privilege will now be shared and therefore both, CLIQ and the Hero could do some fame-gaining again.

An Android update is such an important thing for smartphones given the rage for Google OS based devices in the market and therefore the news of the HTC Hero getting an Android 2.0 update in March raises a few brows. All OS updates i.e 1.6, 2.0 and 2.1 will be delayed until March as per an unofficial source that is certain about the delay.

The delay is a consequence of HTC trying to tightly integrate the HTC Sense UI with the Android 2.0 and other versions of the software. The positive thing is that the HTC Hero might jump straight away from version 1.5 to 2.1 without wasting time in minor intermediate updates.

Russians were a bit let down by HTC when they didn’t get the HTC Hero for their country, but that’s about to change. HTC’s Russian fans will soon get to enjoy the Hero, as was made apparent by a series of events by HTC.

HTC’s 2010 roadmap got leaked recently, and it revealed some details about an upcoming model, the Legend. The device has just been shown to the public, and it looks very similar to the HTC Hero, both in terms of visuals and specifications. The Legend will use a Qualcomm MSM7227 processor – while it’s not anywhere near the Snapdragon in productivity, it’s still pretty fast – after all, it’s a processor designed for budget smartphones.
