Android 8.1 Oreo brought in the feature called SMS Connect that made it possible for users to access their SMS through desktops. The initial phase of the feature saw it being limited to bridging the default Messages app on Android devices and Chromebook. However, third party apps are now leveraging the potential of SMS Connect, with the latest to grab hold of it being Skype.

The video call platform now makes use of SMS Connect feature available on Android Oreo devices to let users read their text messages through PC and Mac devices. The feature is currently made available on the latest Preview Build of Skype, i.e. v 8.29.76.

Users with the aforesaid build can read text messages received on their Android devices using PCs and Mac devices. Besides, users can also compose and send new messages or reply to the messages using PC/Mac devices. Users should keep in mind that enabling the option will also turn Skype into your default messaging app on Android. There is also the option to send SMS using the Skype Credit inside the Skype app on Android.

In addition to the ability to handle SMS, the new Skype Preview Build also comes with the feature to record voice calls made inside the app. No more will users have to rely on third-party apps to get their calls recorded. A dedicated button will be present inside the apps when making calls that can be used to record calls when needed. Skype is also said to be working on the feature to let users’ record video calls along with voice calls.

You can start accessing SMS on desktop by getting the latest Skype Preview on your Android device from Google Play. Microsoft is also said to be working on bringing the feature available on iOS. The call recording feature has though been made available with the latest preview build for iOS. The desktop version too has received the latest preview, giving it the ability to archive conversations.
