Vivo’s All-Screen Concept Turns Real as Manufacturer Unveils the Nex Smartphone

June 16, 2018, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

It has become hard for us to fall for concept devices these days, even if the word comes straight out of the manufacturers. Take the instance of Lenovo, who made the world standing at their toes with the teases for a true bezelless smartphone with over 95% screen-to-body ration.

But as it turned out, the Lenovo Z5 was nothing more than a hyped up device with wide notches, chin, and mediocre specifications. All the company wanted was to grab a few eyeballs with the hype in an attempt to place a foot back into a market that’s squeezing it out. But at least that’s not the case with every manufacturer, and companies like Vivo are giving us back the hope that concepts could be turned real.

We are talking about the Vivo Apex concept that was revealed to the world as a true-bezelless device a few months ago. Back then, the Apex was only a concept and Vivo never appeared to be having the intentions of mass producing it. But roll the calendar pages a few months forward, and we have the Vivo Nex S smartphone, the true consumer-end version of the Apex concept.

The Nex is the dream that is poised to set new display benchmark among smartphone manufacturers. With a screen-to-body ratio of 91.24%, the Vivo Nex S makes all the current bezel-less device look like a device from a setting era. Thanks to the wise consumption of real estate that Vivo has also managed to squeeze in a bigger 6.59-inch measuring display and that too, with a Super AMOLED panel.

Vivo’s technology that helped it cut-out the notch has already been detailed to the world. The pop-up camera for the selfie and the Screen SoundCasting Technology for the ear-piece cannot be judged until it gets to the hands of an end user. But still, Vivo will still carry the credit for coming close to what we can say as a true all-screen device.

As with the specification, the Vivo Nex S smartphone leaves no holds barred. Along with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 flagship SoC, the Nex S also features 8GB of RAM in two storage variants: 128 GB and 256 GB. Battery capacity is of 4000mAh, which is much bigger than what we have in most of the flagship devices.

Vivo’s front pop-up camera houses an 8MP sensor, and the rear camera setup has a dual-camera feature with 12MP and 5MP sensor combo. The Nex S also features an in-display fingerprint sensor like the Vivo X21 smartphone.

Vivo is also rolling out the Nex A smartphone, a less premium version that features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC, which made its debut in the Mi 8 SE from Xiaomi. The in-screen fingerprint sensor is absent on the device as it gets shifted to the rear-side of the device. The device packs 6GB RAM and is available only with 128GB storage. Everything else remains the same including the camera specifications and display.

The Vivo Nex S 128GB storage variant is priced at CNY 4,498 and the 256GB storage variant is priced at CNY 4,998. The Nex A has been priced at CNY 3,898. Both the devices will be available in China starting from June 23.
