WhatsApp Lets You Invoke App Shortcuts in Marshmallow Devices via Custom Launchers

August 3, 2017, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Android Nougat’s App Shortcut feature was in a way an alternate to the 3D Touch of iOS. Indeed, the latter makes use of all the pressure variations. But still, for an OS that lacks the support of pressure sensitive glass, app shortcuts on the home screen was a bliss.

Now, WhatsApp is trying to emulate the feature for not just Nougat users, but also to Marshmallow users. The app is now testing launcher App shortcuts for custom launchers on Android that will let you quickly invoke functions like sending messages or accessing in-app camera in WhatsApp. It should make sense, since Marshmallow still dominates the share among Android device along with Nougat.

As with the features available, WhatsApp is providing options like adding Status directly, accessing pinned chats, open in-app camera, and open frequent chats directly from the home screen. There’s also an option for starting new chats, which we guess should barely be of use among app shortcuts.

The features are currently being tested on the beta version of WhatsApp on Android. V2.17.277 for Android is also bestowed with these features along with the option of accessing starred messages right from the home screen.

The app shortcuts will only be working with a set of custom launchers including Nova Launcher and Action Launcher. So don’t expect WhatsApp to show up the shortcuts on your default Android launcher. As with third-party launcher, users will also be able to invoke swipe gestures to create additional functionalities with the app shortcuts.
