Planning to grab a Pixel smartphone to enjoy the AI features of Google? Hopefully, you may not have to. Google Assistant, the personal AI assistant that is available in Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, will soon step down to other devices.
It was understood that Google Assistant would one day make its way onto non-Pixel smartphones. But it’s just that the entry appears to be taking place sooner than we thought. The hints of the arrival of Google Assistant were found with the apk of Google app, alpha build of which was available for many.
Surprisingly, Google has bundled the Google Assistant feature in the alpha build of Google App, probably for testing purposes before it gets official or appears even in the beta version.
According to report, some users who have installed the alpha build of Google app has started enjoying the Google Assistant experience on their devices. The personal assistant was able to be brought to life by holding the home button on the Android smartphones, and that should probably be carried through when it becomes official through the stable version of the app.
One user had reported the working of Assistant on the Nexus-P smartphone which ran the Android 7.0 Nougat OS. But more interestingly, Google Assistant was also reported to be working comfortably on Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, and that too, on a Samsung Galaxy S5 device.
This means that Google Assistant will not just work with the older version of Android, but also on Non-Nexus devices. Versions below the Marshmallow won’t be getting the Google Assistant however.
The Assistant features are showing up only on few devices as it’s only Alpha version yet. Getting the Assistant on your device is not a sure shot therefore even if the requisites are met. But that should seldom matter, as at least we now know that the Assistant is making its non-Pixel debut sooner than we expected.
