LG’s Upcoming G6 Flagship Will Reinvent Display Aspect Ratio

LG’s display arm is up with a reinvention yet again. The South Korean manufacturers are now reportedly working on a display with QHD+ resolution for its G6 flagship that will simultaneously transform the aspect ratio of the smartphone display to an unusual count.

Compared to Quad HD displays, LG’s QHD+ display will stack additional rows of pixels, making the overall resolution equal 2880×1440 pixels. Interestingly, that makes the aspect ratio of the device embrace a unique ratio of 2:1. Or if going by more perceivable numbers, it can be said that LG’s G6 smartphone will have an aspect ratio of 18:9.

That adds two extra notches to the 16:9 aspect ratio, which is the beloved aspect ratio of modern-day displays used in smartphones, TVs and monitors. This extra space should give the freedom for LG to bring in additional features, like functionalities used in the secondary display of LG’s V series smartphones including the rumored V30.

The recently launched Mi Mix smartphone has upped the aspect ratio on its bezel-less display to 17:1, and the extra space was used to accommodate the navigational buttons of the Android ecosystem. But LG is having even more space, and it should be worth a wait to see what LG is holding up its sleeves with the additional space.

Similar to Mi Mix, the G6 flagship will also be joining force with the bezel-less trend. The new 5.7-inch display used for the G6 will require 10% smaller bezels on its sides, and 20% smaller bezels at the top. With this, LG should be able to considerably reduce the overall size of the flagship, and it’s expected that LG G6 and G5 will measure equal in terms of overall dimension. That’s despite the latter flagship housing a 5.3-inch display.

LG also claims that the new display will increase the power consumption by around 30%. There’s also 10% improvement in transmittance, which should impart better outdoor visibility features to the flagship.

LG G6 is expected to come out with a Snapdragon 835 SoC and 6 GB RAM. The device is also rumored to couple iris scan technology to the front cam. All these features are definitely upping the anticipation for G6 launch, which will take place at MWC next month in Barcelona.
