Facebook Messenger Gets Overhauled with a New Home Screen

June 20, 2016, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Facebook Messenger began as a separate platform for sending and receiving messages sent in the social media. But it has evolved to become more than just a messenger, especially with the addition of chatbots and other features. And the company is now uplifting the app looks to echo the fact that it’s not just a messenger app.

During the company’s keynote event at Wired Business Conference, Facebook’s Vice President of Messaging Products David Marcus introduced a new home screen to the Messenger app which from now on replaces the recent chats view.

No more will the Messenger app show the entire list of your recent chats on the welcome screen like normal messaging apps. But don’t worry, it hasn’t got rid of the recent chat list entirely; it has just got limited to a narrowed space allowed for it on top. Scroll the page down and you can see new features stacked below.

Most frequently contacted users from your list will now get listed horizontally under a new ‘Favorite’ tabs below your recent chat list. Below that is a new ‘Birthdays’ tab so that you don’t forget to wish your friends directly through messages.

What comes below that is the ‘Active Now’ tab that lists all users that are currently logged in on the Messenger. Messenger will only throw a few active contacts onto the list, but users can get the entire list of active members by clicking the ‘See All’ button to the left.

Facebook has brought the changes only to the welcome screen, and the remaining tabs of the Messenger app, namely Calls, Groups, People and Me remains unchanged as of now. According to the company, the new changes have been brought in to make the app utility simplified and easier, making Messenger more than just an ‘inbox’ alongside.

Facebook has also launched the support for text messages in Messenger Android version.
