Amazon’s Alexa will Soon Step Up to Smartwatch

April 26, 2016, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Amazon has got high ambitions with Alexa, and it was revealed with the second wave of Alexa integrated speakers. Now, their vision is slowly gaining ground, as we are soon to witness the first smartwatch powered by Amazon Alexa – the CoWatch.

Coming from iMCO, the CoWatch is currently running its crowd-funding campaign in Indiegogo. Having already grossed more than 100% of its flexible goal, it wouldn’t be taking much time for the first ever Alexa integrated smartwatch to peck the markets.

CoWatch doesn’t bring much innovation design-wise. Its body comes wrapped in stainless steel. It comes with the usual round dials, which binds a 1.39-inch touch-screen in it featuring 400×400 pixel resolution.

The device is run by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor which is coupled with a RAM of 1GB and flash storage of 8GB. The battery capacity hasn’t been revealed, but a single charge is believed to keep the watch ticking under normal usage for around 32 hours.

Default sensors including the vibration motors and heart rate sensors come loaded in CoWatch. The company also adds that the CoWatch has been designed with water resistant properties. But the highlight of the smartwatch is not with its hardware, and is down to the OS integration.

CoWatch runs Android-based OS called Cronologics in it, and can be paired with both iOS and Android smartphones. The OS itself is tweaked to carry out computations by itself or via cloud, so that smartphone integrations are kept minimal for a smoother functioning.

The Alexa integration in the smartwatch would require you to activate it from the smartwatch by tapping it, and doesn’t support hands-free activation as of now. But once woken up, it can pick up all your voices and queries to come up with the right answers.

The audio quality and Alexa’s picking up doesn’t seem to be impressive right now, but the company says that work will be done in order to lift it up before it gets in to the markets.

CoWatch is made available for early backers for an affordable price starting at $159. Shipping of the first batch is expected to begin by early weeks of June.
