After WhatsApp, Facebook Too Hanging Up on BlackBerry

March 23, 2016, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Shortly after WhatsApp decided to part ways with the older BlackBerry devices, parent company Facebook has now announced that it will follow the same path. The social media networking service will soon be discontinuing its app support for the older BlackBerry devices that run BlackBerry 10 and BBOS.

The revelation surprisingly doesn’t come from Facebook, but from BlackBerry itself. The matter was revealed through a blog post by Lou Gazzola, BlackBerry’s senior marketing manager for developer relations.

Gazzola also expressed disappointment about the decision opted by Facebook, which comes shortly after WhatsApp deciding to pull all services in older BlackBerry devices.

But unlike WhatsApp, there has been no specific period mentioned within which the app services of Facebook will be brought down. It’s most likely that it follow the same lines of WhatsApp by taking down the app within the last month of 2016.

The blog also highlighted that the company is working on alternate solutions. Switching to BlackBerry Messenger was one option listed by the company upon WhatsApp discontinuation, but it seems like switching to a new platform won’t hold good for BlackBerry in the case of Facebook.

The disappointment for BlackBerry doubles in the regard that Facebook will also axe the essential APIs, which means that third-party developers will be barred from providing Facebook services.

As of now, the only pragmatic way by which older BlackBerry device users could still enjoy their social networking time is by switching to the mobile browser version of Facebook, which is unlikely to be hit by a support-threat.
