Snapdragon 820: Kryo Revelation and Stellar Benchmark Performance

September 7, 2015, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Qualcomm had been a bit hesitant in revealing the upcoming chipset all at once. They have been throwing us only the bits and pieces of what’s making their upcoming Snapdragon 820 chipset.

The latest to get revealed is the Kryo CPUs, which will form the heart for their heterogeneous architecture.

After the insights about GPU/ISP and the DSP, Snapdragon introduced their new Kryo CPUs via a blog post, which seldom loosened the grip over the concealment.

Not much has been revealed about the new architecture, but as far as we could assimilate, the new chipset will feature 4-custom cores, called Kryo, in its heart.

The chipset will adopt the latest 14nm manufacturing process, which combined with the Kryo CPUs will offer double the performance and power efficiency of their 810 chipsets.

While the latter featured ARM-designed cores, Snapdragon 820 will see the return of Qualcomm to custom-Krait CPUs as seen with 800, 801 and 805 SoCs.

Qualcomm also explains more about the heterogeneous architecture, with which the CPU will split the task between its GPU and DSPs rather than having it done all by itself. The SoC is also believed to feature the Adreno 530 GPU.

Although with all the remaining details kept concealed, leakers have somehow managed to get access to the benchmark ratings, and the above-said architecture seems to be rising above the expectations.

The device spotted with the 820 SoC was Green Orange X1, whose Antutu rating screenshots were leaked by Weibo. And it’s quite astounding to notice that it delivered the best ever performance from a SoC, with a mighty rating of 83774 and 82307 in each of the two tests carried out.

However, the tests were carried out with a display resolution of 1920 X 1080, which suggests that the ranking may come down once it starts powering a QHD display. It also used Android KitKat OS, which is well short of the current Lollipop used that’s used in smartphones.

What’s pointed out here is that the values cannot be confirmed as the end-result, as there’s still more to be revealed of the new chipset. It’s expected that Snapdragon 820 will make its debut in Xiaomi’s Mi5, which is expected to be announced later this year.
