Honda City Car Production Stopped to Promote Mobilio

August 6, 2014, By S Ranjita

Sadly for many aspiring customers, Honda Cars India has stopped the production of its much claimed City sedan, giving out the space for Mobilio- the all new model!

Surprisingly, Mobilio has registered more than 10,000 bookings within a week of the launch, surprising many. The Mobilio has been planned and designed by Honda Cars India exclusively for the MPV or multi-purpose vehicle segment, which currently holds around 15% of total car sales for each month.

A report in NDTV has quoted sources from the Honda Cars India on the transfer of manufacturing unit of Honda City to Tapukara plant, located in Rajasthan from the Greater Noida facility with the clear aim to ensure time production and delivery of the all new Mobilo!

The sources also confirmed that although the production of City has been stalled for now, it will resume back in September 2014.

This pins down that the customers awaiting their City will have to wait for at least October for delivery, according to most dealers.

The new City had proved to be money minting for the Honda team, which has been registering an average of 7,000 units every month, ever since it was launched in January 2014. Add to that, it holds close to 50 per cent market share in the sedan range.

Both Amaze compact sedan and City have Honda the third-largest car maker in India as of July, and with Mobilio, the expectations are huge.

CEO of Honda Motor India, Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, has mentioned the plans for expansion by March 2017. Apart from rolling new products, the company will increase the number of dealers by March 2015 to 230 as compared to 179 for now!
