When it comes to social networking, Facebook does stand out in a crowd. But this social platform doesn’t seem to be doing great when it comes to online merchandise.

The social networking behemoth has decided to drop its ‘Gifts’ services started two years ago. The focus will now be shifted to boosting the sales of businesses and developers with the ‘Buy’ button.

The Gifts service was introduced on the August 12, 2012, and will have its demise on the same day this year. Started with presenting physical gift items to your friends on special occasions, Facebook had limited the gifts in form of digital gift cards after a year of its launch.

But it seems apparent that the service wasn’t doing the expected for the company. Facebook, however, will be adding the ‘Buy’ button to promote developer items along with the links appearing on the pages.

It has been reported that the social networking major, the company will be using everything it had learnt from Gifts to explore new ways to help businesses and developers drive sales on the web, on mobile, and directly on Facebook.

Facebook is also set to pioneer a set of features that could prove handy for online shopping that involves Autofill to populate the billing info, Custom Audience and Offline Sales Measurement.

To what extent Facebook can fruitfully help networkers in providing a smooth platform for online shopping now needs to be seen.
