South Africa declared their innings for 455 for 9 in the 1st Test against Sri Lanka being played at Pallekele.

When last reports came in, the Sri Lankan score was 82 for the loss of one wicket, trailing by 360 runs with nine wickets in hand.

The first day, South Africa started off with a splendid start and were 195 for 1. It was a near perfect start when Sri Lanka hit back with four wickets.

Dean Elgar became the first South African opener to make a test hundred in Sri Lanka but his dismissal kick started Sri Lanka’s game of success.

Sri Lanka discovered a promising reverse swing after lunch and they struck back after tea. It had been South Africa all throughout till then.

Elgar, only in his third innings and for the first time outside South Africa played positively. To further add to Sri Lanka’s worries, Faf du Plessis, batting at number 3 and Shaminda Eranga had been restricted to nine overs after splitting the webbing of his right hand while fielding.

South Africa have had three century opening partnerships in Tests in Sri Lanka and this time it seems that South Africa was ready to make it to the fourth time. Elgar seemed very comfortable on crease and his dismissal was not a very happy thing for the South African side.

South Africa took tea at 194 for 1, but despite being a bowler short, Sri Lanka weren’t prepared to hand them a third session on the trot. Hashim Amla, the captain of the side had won the toss on a pitch that was to turn later.

The batting side, tried put all their superb players, AB de Villiers seemed to be taking South Africa safely ahead even when Sri Lanka got a new ball, but a loose ball caught him and found his stumps disturbed in the penultimate over.

Both teams have displayed good talent. Sri Lanka a bowler shot did not allow their opponents to stay on the crease for long.
