Fujifilm FinePix S1Weather Resistant 50x Zoom at CES

January 9, 2014, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Fujifilm has been working on something real big for the past couple of years or so. Yes, you guessed it right. The company has been prepping its FinePix lineup and also its compacts.

Now at CES 2014, we saw Fujifilm combining the models it has to make the world’s first weather resistant mega zoom.

This FinePix S1, as we all know, has a predecessor –  the FinePix SL1000 that was announced last year. The new one also features a 50x zoom lens which goes between 24mm to 1200mm, also with an f2.8-5.6 aperture range instead of f2.9-6.5.

There is also a 1/2.3-inch 16.4-megapixel CMOS sensor situated behind the lens along with a vari-angle LCD which measures up to 3 inches. Also, this one comes with a 0.2 inch electronic viewfinder for framing the shots.

Though Fujifilm does not say how much the camera is resistant of weather and dust, it is still a hopeful sign. Though it could be too much to ask if you want to go diving with it, it would handle rain, snow and the like.

The S1 claims to be a speedy camera, the initial start up time also is as small as 0.7 second. For auto focus, it takes about 0.14 second. It can also shoot up to ten frames per second.

And the killer feature? It has built in Wifi to send the photos wherever you want or even connect it to the mobile and use it as a control!

So, if you are looking to using a highly flexible camera, then spare $499.95 to buy FinePix S1 coming March. For those, who are just after the 50x zoom lens, Fujifilm is offering the FinePix S9400W and FinePix S9200.

Though  FinePix S1 is similar to Fujifilm’s last year’s camera, the f2.9-6.5 24-1200mm lens and 1/2.3-inch 16.2-megapixel CMOS sensor makes all the difference.

The $349.95 S9400W comes with built-in Wi-Fi, but the $329.95 S9200 does not. If you prefer durability more,  Fujifilm has updated its lower-end rugged camera that comes for $229.95,FinePix XP70, water resistant and this will be available from March.

This one is waterproof to 33 feet and also shockproof from 5 feet, freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and dustproof. It also comes with a 5x f3.9-4.9 28-140mm lens, a 1/2.3-inch 16.4-megapixel CMOS sensor, and Wi-Fi.

Another announcement Fujifilm made at CES 2014 was about the $229.95 S8600, an AA-battery powered compact with a 36x f2.9-6.9 25-900mm lens and a 16-megapixel CCD sensor.
