Meet Vaxan Wattman, Most Powerful Electric Motorcycle Ever

December 9, 2013, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

The Paris Motor Show had a big surprise in store for all. The surprise came in the form of yet another “world’s most powerful electric motorcycle”.

The Vaxan Wattman electric motorcycle with its 150 kW at full tilt and top speed of 170 km/h is 350 kilos in total weight, and claims to be the world’s most powerful electric motorcycle.

Voxan’s electric motor can deliver 150 kW (200 hp) at 10,500 rpm, and generates some 200 Nm of torque, which is more than most of the torque curve. The transmission is also simple; a belt drive is all you need. Wattman’s new design is inspired from the exoskeleton of a scorpion.

The tubular metal frame is an aluminum exoskeleton, which supports the power train. The rear wheel is hung with the help of a four-link parallel suspension, for a smooth ride. The design is also smooth, something which reflects the bike as a whole and not detailed parts.

The battery pack is made of lithium-ion and has a capacity of 12.8 kWh, and weighs around 100 kilos. Battery capacity is expected to power the bike for at least five minutes on a full throttle though you may not even use this level of power in any case.

As per estimates a fully-charged Wattman will have a range of 180 km, but the calculation is largely based on the urban driving cycle for which the average speed is 33.6 km/h and batteries last for 5.35 hours at an average power of 2.4 kW .

Wattman will be the most powerful semi-production electric motorcycle in the world, with its 150 kW of peak power overpowering even Lightning Motorcycles Super Bike (125 kW/165 hp).

But in terms of performance, Wattman’s 0-100 km/h (0-63 mph) comes to 3.4 seconds and is beat by the Lightning’s 0-160 km/h (0-100 mph), which is just 3 seconds. Top speeds are also not worth comparing, the Lightning races along at up to 265 km/h (166 mph) while Wattman’s is just 170 km/h (106 mph).

Gizmag is of the opinion that Wattman is heavier than Lightning by almost 140 kg (310 lb), and this might be a problem.  But with the exoskeleton design of Wattman it is difficult for the weight reduction to take place.

So Wattman looks like powerful motorcycle with limited perks. And top it off; it will be hand-assembled as per order, unit by unit. This means it is going to be very costly too!
