The Amazon Drones Are Coming To Your House! [video]

December 2, 2013, By Daniel Rapcencu

In the past year, drones have been prominent in the news. Aside from wartime use, the domestic use of drones has been on everyone’s mind. Homeland Security has drones and they are also being adopted by police departments. It is frightening to think a drone equipped with infrared imaging could fly up to your 5th floor apartment and see what you are doing.

You can even buy drones on the Internet for personal use. Equip them with cameras and spy on your neighbors, if you wish! Your neighbors can invade your privacy too. Animal rights groups are even using drones to illegally harass hunters. Individuals have even equipped drones with firearms to protect themselves against the Zombie Apocalypse!

The proliferation of drones is rapidly spreading. So it was only a matter of time before some company would use this technology to save money and increase productivity. Leave it to Amazon to go where no other company has gone before. Welcome to Amazon Prime Air.

Amazon Prime Air uses a completely autonomous drone to deliver a package within a radius of 10 miles of a fulfillment center. The goal is to deliver small orders within 30 minutes of being placed. To get this service, you must be within the 10-mile radius of a fulfillment center. See, Amazon is smart in many different ways; one is that its fulfillment centers are closest to the biggest concentrations of customers.

The drones, called octocopters, are designed to carry orders of five pounds or less. There is a good reason for this, as 86% of Amazon’s orders fit into this category. Since the octocopters use electric motors instead of requiring trucks to deliver the goods, they save on energy costs. The earliest we could possibly see Prime Air in operation would be 2015. It will take at least that long for the FAA to develop the rules for operating below 10,000 feet.
