Get Drunk, Without Getting Drunk: There is a Magic Potion for That

November 13, 2013, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

To gulp down a few drinks and attend a meeting always sounded good, right?  But getting tipsy after those awesome drinking sessions is sure a turn off.

However, it now seems like that will not be an issue to keep you away from booze anymore.

British neuro-psychopharmacologist David Nutt says in an article in The Guardian that after he explored an alcohol surrogate compound he was relaxed and then after being intoxicated for an hour, he gave a lecture with no effects of the alcohol he had.

According to Nutt, the new booze compound works, because it specifically targets subsystems of the neurotransmitter system that produces the same relaxed feeling that a few cocktails would induce.

In other words, the alcohol surrogate makes people relaxed, without other unwanted effects like hangovers, aggression and even addictiveness.

Nutt says that with a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines  (found in prescription doses in drugs like Valium and Xanax) makes us feel concerned whether no hangovers means one can’t stand up after drinking.

He carried out research on replacing ethanol in ‘alcoholic’ drinks with a safer alternative, such as a benzodiazepine .

With these, it would be impossible to get drunk; it just produces a moderate buzz with no increase in effects at higher doses. One also has an option to switch off at the end of the night with a pill.

Nutt also wonders whether this is the most scientific breakthrough since the micro-drunkenness-inducing spray.

Think of a world where everyone is drunk all the time, whether it is before getting on a bus or an important meeting.

But it is going to be a while before this new magical compound will be available in a normal liquor store. Now all that is available is Nutt’s experimental stash.

Nutt was a controversial figure in Britain who was fired from an influential government position as chair of the country’s Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, mainly because of his outspoken view that legal drugs including alcohol are more dangerous than many illegal ones like cannabis.

The funding for his project has not come through at present, and Nutt has taken his pitch for public investments.

What do you have to say about this magic compound? Would you try it out or would you give in to a hangover thinking that would be one not to be ignored after effect of a drinking session? Tell us all about that.
