Livescribe 3 Smartpen Works Well with Your Mobile Device; Companion App Comes in Handy

October 29, 2013, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Professional note-taking just hopped on to a higher pedestal. The launch of the latest Livescribe 3 smartpen brings to the fore the integration of technology into a ball point pen.

Sporting a new design, the Livescribe 3 smartpen is built to work with smartphones and tablets . What you have already seen in Livescribe’s earlier innovation is its ability capture words, and then annotate them into digital data.

What’s new about the latest outing is that it has a larger display and goes beyond just storing the recorded audio on itself. The Livescribe 3 smartpen actually uses the microphone on your tablet or smartphone so as to record it there.

Livescribe has lifted the wraps off 2 variants of the latest smartpen, which in fact serves you as a mobile companion with an app.

What you would find in this new smartpen is a capacitive stylus on the end witch which you don’t write! The tip of the pen, meanwhile, is the one you need to use for tapping on your smartphone or tablet.

The device also has an LED status indicator, a textured twist ring for retracting the ink tip or to turn on the device. A tungsten carbide premium ball tip is also part of the gadget.

The magic lies in the app that accompanies the device. It helps you record and playback audio. Besides, it also is handy when it comes to organizing data, searching for your handwriting, data tagging and to share and transform notes and audio. It also helps you incorporate photos too.

The notes taken own and stored by the device can also be shared on to email, Evernote, and Dropbox .

The earlier version in comparison didn’t have all these features. What we also love about the new iteration is that t is all about linking to smartphones and slates. Livescribe has started offering the device for $150.

When you part with that amount, you get to play with a 50-sheet starter notebook, a micro-USB charging cable, the free Livescribe+ app for iOS7, and one tungsten carbide ballpoint cartridge.

We are told that the companion app works well with iPhone 4S models and newer variants, and also the third-generation iPad, the iPad Mini first generation, and the iPod Touch fifth generation devices.

Livescribe’s second variant of the smartpen  comes for a tad higher amount. Called the Livescribe 3 smartpen Pro Edition, it can be yours for $200. A 100-sheet premium bound journal, a leather smartpen portfolio, a cable, the app, two cartridges, and a one-year subscription to Evernote Premium are what the Pro variant offers.

You will also not have to worry about how long the device will stay alive. Livescribe states that the device will run continuously for 17 hours on a single charge.
