Samsung Galaxy Round Concave Phone: Different, But Do You Want to Own One?

October 12, 2013, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

The smart phone market, as you would know, is already saturated. So for a manufacturer to make some impact in the scenario, it has become imperative that something very different should have to be thought about.

And now, Samsung is ready with something different. The ‘concave’ phone from the smart phone major has just turned real. What we get to see in the handset horizon is a curved OLED display that has everything in it that’s bound to catch just about everyone’s attention.

The Korean smart phone maker has revealed its Galaxy Round, and the handset is similar to its latest product, Galaxy Note 3. However, the new iteration features a lengthwise dip in the center .

This lengthwise curve allows the handset to fit ergonomically into the face of the user when he makes a call, Samsung claims.

According to folks at Samsung, the Galaxy Round is the first handset in the market with a curved super flexible AMOLED display. The device would head only for the Korea marts for the time being. This, we guess, is aimed at attracting more customers in the long run.

In case you are reminded of the earlier Nexus S that came with a curved display, you need to note only the screen glass was curved.

The 5.7 inch display of Galaxy Round has a HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The specifications of the new handset are very much similar to that of Note 3.

Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad core processor with a clock frequency of 2.3 GHz, it also hides within itself has 3 GB RAM and 32 GB of inbuilt storage.

The smart phone runs the latest OS variant from the Android family – Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Samsung’s latest TouchWiz user interface has also been thrown in.

On the imaging front, the device has a 13 megapixel primary camera for good quality snaps and a 2 megapixel front snapper for video calls and selfies.

Sporting dimensions of 151.1 x 79.6 x 7.9 mm and a weight of 154 gm, it gets its power from a 2800mAh battery which in fact would help it live longer. Sammy is now thinking of just one hue on the device – luxury brown.

This super- ergonomic device comes with a price tag of around $1000. A hefty tag, indeed!  On that note, we are forced to state that the limited release and the price could be the two aspects that could leave potential buyers disappointed.

It needs to be noted that many manufacturers have already made smart phones which are curved at the rear. But this one is definitely a first. There could be doubts in the minds of critics about this device, when they dissect aspects such as durability of the device  and software features.

It is a given that even the company may not be expecting this device to become a best seller. Samsung could well be only trying to show off their capabilities to create different types of devices. And, with the Galaxy Round, they have proven their skill once again. What is your take on the Round?
