Until a few years ago, business professionals used to swear by BlackBerry. The Canadian manufacturer ruled the smart phone scenario with amazing features and services, and  it took over the phone arena with its BlackBerry Messenger (BBM).

And then it fell to depths. Of late, the struggling smart phone manufacturer has decided to launch its most popular application on Android and iOS.

The company has made it official that its instant messaging app will be available for free download, starting September 21. The new BBM app for Android needs Android 4.0 ICS operating system or higher versions. In the case of the iPhone, the app works with all iOS devices which run on iOS 6 or higher versions.

BBM is one of the first instant messaging apps on smart phones. It, in fact, is the predecessor of the present popular instant messaging services like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. The app comes pre loaded in all BlackBerry devices, which made their handsets unique in the past.

BBM was in the news a few years ago, due to the fact that those messages sent through this service cannot be decoded by security agencies and spy networks of the governments. Many defense agencies stood against the use of BBM, arguing that this facility may be misused by unwanted elements.

The main features of the upcoming BBM app are file sharing, group chat, BBM chat and most importantly the unique PIN which provides high security for the messages.

With the service now coming to Android and iOS  platforms, it looks like BlackBerry has something to look forward to. What do you feel?
