Photo Tools on Google+: Will They Help Beat Facebook?

August 22, 2013, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Facebook remains the most-used social network on the Web with more than 1.1 billion members.  Recently Facebook confirmed that more than 300 million photos were uploaded daily on the social networking platform.

While Google+ service holds just about 190 million members and is placed as the No.2 social network. But, Google is still hopefully looking towards its social networking site and also introducing more improved features.

This year, Google has added several new features  to its G+ service to outdo Facebook on the photo front. We thought we need to list out here for you the top five photo features and tools on Google +, which include auto backup, auto enhance, GIFs and panoramas, highlights, and search.

The new Auto backup app in G+ is available for both Android and Apple devices.  With this app you can automatically back up your camera phone photos. All you need is to download the app and click on the “auto backup” tab in the settings.

Once you have completed every photo you have in your mobilephone, they will be instantly uploaded to Google+. Moreover, you won’t have to worry about the privacy of these photos, as they are uploaded privately.

You can log into your G+ account and create galleries, add tags and descriptions. Auto backup lets you share photos both on the social network and through e-mails. Your photos will be saved in the cloud, so that you can get them back whenever you need them. To make users happy, Google is also offering 15 gigabytes of free cloud storage to its users.

Google has also introduced GIFs and panoramas to its G+ service, so that you can turn a series of pictures into GIFs and post them on the social network. This tool also helps create panoramas of scenic shots.

Back in 2012, Google bought Nik Software to its G+. Nik’s software was already popular among professional photographers as it enhances the quality of images.

According to Cushing, a product manager for Google, with Nik’s Auto-enhance tool in G+, you can improve the color saturation and clarity of images. Users also get the option of undoing the auto tools and will be allowed to showcase images without the enhancements.

If you are someone who likes to travel a lot, then the ‘Highlights’ feature on the G+ is for you, as it can create a highlight showcase of about 1,000 photos.

As we all know, Google is all about searching data, and interestingly it brings those search tools to G+. With G+’s new search feature, you can search for photos of your family and friends.

Moreover, Google is offering advanced searching, such as you can type red so that it can bring you photos including red sunsets, red tablecloths and more. Surely, it is a faster method to find photos you’ve taken. What do you think?

Well, it could be difficult for either Google + or other social networks to beat Facebook, but this kind of updates and enhanced photo features will surely attract more people to G+, especially for the photography freaks among you.
