Sony PlayStation Cloud Gaming to Launch in 2014

June 11, 2013, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

We just heard Sony PlayStation’s cloud gaming service will be available in 2014, initially in the US. But the company has not yet mentioned the UK and EU release dates.

The cloud gaming service will allow gamers on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 systems, followed by PlayStation Vita gamers, to access to PS3 games over the internet.

Well, this seems to be an innovative way of addressing the backwards compatibility issues in the PlayStation 4, since it is unable to play the older PS3 games.

According to Sony, the cloud gaming service is based on Gaikai’s proprietary network technology that was purchased by Sony in July 2012.

Before its purchase, Gaikai had allowed full PC games to be played on PCs, tablets, and smart TVs via a web browser. Sony claims that this technology delivers fast and responsive gameplay.

The company had made this announcement at this year’s E3 show. During the event the company also revealed the PS4’s hardware design.

Interestingly, Sony’s PS4 is priced £80 lower than its main rival, Microsoft’s Xbox One. Above all, Sony has also revealed that there would be no restrictions on second hand game sales.
