Magura eLECT Electronic Suspension System is a Boon for Mountain Bikers

May 31, 2013, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Magura has introduced its new electronic suspension control system for mountain bikes, with a new auto-lockout technology that senses changes in terrain. This electronic suspension system is simple, lightweight and efficient.

The self adjusting technology is called the eLECT electronic suspension system and contains an eLECT module that replaces the top-mounted adjustment cap/knob on existing Magura TS6 or TS8 R suspension forks.

This lightweight module consists of a microprocessor, 3D accelerometer, LED indicator lights and servo motor. It also includes a lithium-ion battery and a micro USB port for recharging the battery.

The accelerometer not only senses the changes like bumps, but also registers the size of that bump.

It then reacts within 0.2 seconds and alerts the suspension. This is done by a powered rotating shim at the bottom of the cartridge. This shim rotates back or forth about 45 degrees that is enough to close or open three oil ports.

The eLECT system is also capable of detecting free fall, and in such situations it opens up the suspension to allow for a soft landing.

The cartridge weighs 81 grams, while the remote switch is just 12 grams, both are claimed to be waterproof.  There is no word on the pricing or availability details of the eLECT.
