Mozilla Firefox OS Tablet Ready to Roar; Foxconn Pact

May 28, 2013, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

How about a Mozilla slate now? The company, known for its widely used Firefox web browser, has teamed up with Foxconn to push out of its stables a new device that will be powered by Firefox OS.

The two companies have jointly sent out press invites for an event to be held on June 3. It is expected that the new device could see the wraps go off it on that day.

The new device is assumed to be a Firefox OS tablet, going by the fact that a Spain-based company named Geeksphone began selling two Mozilla smartphones in April.

These two devices are now said to be used by created an opening for developers for building apps for Firefox OS.

The Firefox OS, in the meantime, has already found a slew of supporters in LG Electronics, China Unicom, America Movil, ZTE and Deutsche Telekom. It is also being reported that Mozilla has lured as many as 18 mobile network operators and four mobile phone manufacturers to back the Firefox OS.

Though these partners have no big presence in the US marketplace, they are known ones in smaller regions. Our gut feel is that the Firefox OS and device might be looking at budget-conscious markets initially.

You might be aware that Firefox is not default on Android and is not used on iOS. That being the case, Mozilla would want to create an independent platform to grow and blossom.

Tie-ups with phone makers who would welcome Firefox OS could be a possibility in the short term. Stay tuned.
