Sony Xperia SP Ready for Summer; Sports Mid-Range Price

March 20, 2013, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

After the Sony Xperia Z grabbed the limelight for Sony this year, the company is back with a new, mid-range offering – the Sony Xperia SP. The new device is a follow-up of the Xperia S and Xperia P models.

The Xperia SP is a colorful device, having included an illuminated transparent bar in its design and the phone can light up in different colors through LED lights. This can be achieved with the on-screen footage to base the color of light.  Alternatively, you can set it up as you like with combinations of colored LEDs.

At a glance, the Xperia Z and the Xperia SP look similar. The body is good build quality and there is an aluminum standby button at the side.

A 4.6-inch screen adorns the face of the phone, and it is capable of 720p resolution. Sony has integrated the handset with the Mobile Bravia Engine 2 for rich colors in playback.

A dual-core, 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 processor hides itself under the cover, and Android 4.1 OS provides the platform for applications. Sony has merged the platform with its own software elements like Listen, Create, Watch and Play.

The handset comes with NFC and support for 4G connectivity. On the photography side, there is an 8-megapixel camera in the rear from Exmor RS sensor and paired with an f/2.4 aperture lens.

The camera features a built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode that allows the user to snap two pictures in quick succession and then merge them into one whole picture, enabling more shadow and highlight details in one frame. The front face of the device holds a VGA shooter that will do for video calls.

The smartphone comes with 8GB of onboard memory and a microSD card slot that will allow for expansion when necessary.

Sony is looking to release the Xperia SP this summer, and the handset will be available in black, white and red.

Sony said the device will be of mid-range price, but hasn’t disclosed how the price tag would look like. We also don’t have a confirmed date of launch, but going by the summer mention, we should be hearing about it soon.
