Samsung Nods in Affirmation for a Smartwatch

March 20, 2013, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

We will be able to see a smartwatch from Samsung real soon. Executive vice president of mobile, Lee Young Hee, confirmed the news although he didn’t say anything about the functionality or the release date.

According to Lee, Samsung has been preparing this gadget for some time now. “We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them,” he said.

We have already noticed a boom in sale of smartwatches in the market. There are products from small companies that are generally considered as companion devices to a users’ Android or iOS handsets.

Rumors about heftier products from companies like Apple have resurfaced. We have heard talks of an iWatch from Apple, and rumors of a 2013 launch have popped up.

Apple is said to have around a 100 people working on the iWatch. However, the rumors haven’t presented a clear idea on how the iWatch is supposed to function.

There are speculations about the device harboring some of the iPad and iPhone features for the wrist, especially a Siri-access function. So, with such rumors making the rounds, it is not completely surprising that Samsung has decided to leap in as well.

“The issue here is who will first commercialize it so consumers can use it meaningfully,” admits Lee. The electronic giant has already touched upon the wearable market with its range of accessories for the Galaxy S 4 that was announced last week.

Recent unconfirmed news states that the company is at present focusing on the Galaxy Altius, which is a wearable that has a compact display to show music, call, messaging, and other data. Let’s see whether Samsung is ready to spill the beans on their smartwatch anytime soon.
