Sony Smart Handset in the Works; to Quell iPhone 5 and SIII Onslaught

November 19, 2012, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Sony is not going through a great time on the front lines in the mobile war right now. Apparently, the major trio Apple, HTC and Samsung are holding sway with effective software support fr their devices. Sony’s Android phones couldn’t catch up with regular updates and hadn’t had a premium device to stand against the fight.

A couple of weeks ago, leaks cropped up on a new Sony line of smartphones set for an early 2013 roll out. From the rumored specs, the devices – Xperia C660X Yuga and Xperia C650X Odin – seem to be better candidates for the feature-rich high end slot.

Affirming that belief, Sony’s CVP Sales & Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications Dennis van Schie talked to Financial Times Deutschland about a device that they are readying to place between the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S III.

He has been quoted as saying that the company will “create in the near future a flagship model that can compete with Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S III.”

Though no mention was made on the specific details of the models or when the new model will roll out, as a part of 2013 plan, Sony will focus on providing massive content support with cross platform functionality. It would be better if the Video Unlimited app could reach out to more phones as it is only available for some selected Xperia models.

Besides the smartphone plans, Sony has also raised concerns on the tablet market. Though it has become a tough arena for making money from tablets, Sony might come up with new Android tablets  – though not many in number. The company also has interest in the Windows Phone 8 platform, but nothing has been revealed whether Sony is working on something on the OS.

We probably expect Sony’s flagship device to be revealed at the next edition of CES.
