ISIS Mobile Wallet Program to roll out by October 22nd

October 16, 2012, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

As a joint mobile payment project backed by AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, ISIS was previously set to roll out in selected markets by the end of September. But due to technical and still undisclosed reasons, the launch was pushed back.

Now, according to a purported internal memo, it looks like ISIS will launch on a trial basis on October 22nd for selected T-Mobile customers in Salt Lake City, Utah and Austin,Texas.

In order to use the Mobile Wallet service, users will need a special ISIS SIM card that will be compatible with the Galaxy S III, Galaxy S II and Galaxy S Relay 4G.

It should be noted that rooted devices will not support the service, just as rooted devices are unable to use Google Wallet.

There are so many features associated with the ISIS mobile wallet platform. As expected, ISIS will hold virtual versions of credit cards, an ISIS Cash Card (prepaid card), store loyalty cards, and a section for special offers and promotions.

When users activate ISIS for the first time, they get a $10 bonus card that they can use. Users can also upgrade the ISIS Cash Card to “reloadable” status which will give him an additional $15.

If the user’s phone is lost or stolen, he can call Verizon and they will freeze ISIS from working. So security problems are of no concern. ISIS will work at merchant locations that use Visa PayWave, MasterCard Paypass, Discover Zip, American Express and Google Wallet.

Verizon will use new NFC-SIM cards on their ISIS approved devices. This will likely create an additional level of security. It’s also a level of security that they can have intense control over.

The official “ISIS ready” device is the DROID Incredible 4G LTE. The device is set to receive an update to make it ISIS ready. Additional devices will be made available at a later time, but it should be noted that not all NFC phones can support ISIS.

If one lives in a trial market and purchase an Incredible 4G LTE on or after October 22 (launch day), it will be activated with a new NFC-SIM card.

If a customer already owns an Incredible 4G LTE and live in a test market, he will be able to obtain an NFC-SIM to replace his current SIM. From October 22 to November 20, anyone can buy an Incredible 4G LTE and receive a $50 Visa Pre-Paid card.

But such users will have to activate ISIS and submit a rebate form in order to get the card. Though ISIS and their partners have not released details for a nationwide rollout, October 22 is launch day for the two test markets.
