Samsung Plans to Patent Safe Taxi System

Samsung plans to develop a smartphone based system that will increase the safety of the passengers inside a cab if the driver puts them at risk and will also help them rate taxis for future passengers.

According to a patent application submitted by Samsung at the United States Patent and Trademarks Office (USPTO), the system will help passengers to release an SOS request to the police in no time if they find anything wrong while they are on a taxi.

The SOS mode which can be turned on by the passenger can flag the taxi’s location to police, helping them reach the spot before any untoward incident takes place.

As per the patent filing, it can also be a taxi finding service which helps users to pick a better taxi in the immediate vicinity based on a rating system.

The rating system allows passengers to rate a taxi based on driver’s behavior towards passengers or his kindness. The rating will be visible to other users of the app when they want to call a nearby taxi.

A short range wireless link will help the passengers pin point the taxi they want to pick based on the rating.

Though the patent is already filed, it is not clear if Samsung will really develop the system in to a working app any time in future considering that more advanced technologies are in the offing to provide better safety to the passengers.

There are also chances that the rating system can be manipulated just as other digital systems if it has vulnerabilities. However, we think taxi rating will be an interesting idea.
