We agree that Smartphone space is no befitting ground for hardcore gaming folks who crave for powerful machines to get their adrenaline pumping. However, smartphone folks also play games and recent data show that iOS could become the most popular gaming platform in the near future.
Asymco, a market research firm, recently compared cumulative sales of home console and handheld gaming devices to the number of registered users for the iOS Game Center service so as to measure iOS as a gaming platform.
Game Center- – a free service which enables better gaming experience on an iOS device- according to Apple’ s figures, has 130 million users.
This means iOS trails Nintendo DS’s and Sony Play Station 2’s unit sales figures of 150 million each. That makes iOS the third most popular gaming platform.
However, if the comparison criterion is sales figures, not the registered users at the Game Center, Apple will dominate any gaming console as it had sold over 400 million units.
Considering the fact that not all iOS users need a Game Center registration to play games on iOS devices, it can be assumed that the actual number of gamers on iOS platform will be more than 130 million.
It is estimated that the number of registrations at the Game Center will cross 150 million mark in September and will hit 200 million by the end of the year which is a point where no game console has managed to reach so far.
With new generation gamers picking mobile devices as their favorite playground, it is likely that Apple might enjoy a new title in the gadget world very soon.
