HTC to Roll Out New Facebook Phone Next Year

Not many were enthused by HTC’s Facebook-dedicated phones as they fell short of expectations. Now the phone maker is planning to woo FB users with a new offering.

Sources close to the Taiwanese phone maker hint that the company is planning to roll out a brand new phone next year in collaboration with Facebook. The new phone will have deeper Facebook integration than the dedicated FB button.

In the past, HTC had rolled out two Facebook smartphones – HTC Cha-Cha (renamed HTC Status on the AT&T), which had a QWERTY keypad, and HTC Salsa, which didn’t have a full QWERTY keyboard. Both these phones had dedicated Facebook buttons which gave easy access to the most popular social networking site in the web.

HTC had aimed at tapping the growing number Facebook users. But sources close to HTC, on condition of anonymity, confirm that the phones did not perform in the market as expected by the company.

This time around, HTC has a better chance to succeed. That is because Facebook has decided to work along with the company to bring out the new phone. Facebook is reportedly working on the OS of the phone which will give deeper social networking integration. HTC will meet the hardware requirements for the device.

Meanwhile, rumor mills claim that Facebook is even thinking of building its own gadget ecosystem in the lines of Amazon by tweaking the Android platform.
