Microsoft Surface Tablet Triggers Innovation Race Among PC makers

June 28, 2012, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

The showcasing of Microsoft’s Surface tablets has made many big players of PC making industry sit and think. If sources close to upstream supply chain companies who provide hardware components to PC makers are to be believed, they fear the emergence of a bigger rival in the market, almost like Apple.

But unlike Apple or its legendary tablet iPad, Microsoft tablets will be a direct threat to the existence and survival of many of their products, not just tablets, feel the top brass of these companies.

Microsoft amazed everybody by unveiling its first own branded PC product. The physical keyboard on the Surface tablets which brings more productivity without affecting the portability of the device is considered a killer innovation.

As per estimates, this makes Surface tablets compete and replace even laptops in the market, not to mention the touch screen tablet rivals without physical keyboard.

So PC makers now feel that there is need for more innovation and to compete and differentiate with Microsoft. However, many observers assume that the software developer giant was left with no options when it found unsatisfactory design ideas from hardware partners while approaching the lunch of its new platform.

If the launch of the Surface tablets triggers more innovation which leverages the usability of the gadgets, we think it will be a positive trend. What do you think about it?
