When Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops comes to mind, the time frame you should think of is the Cold War and everything before that. Treyarch’s own Call of Duty franchise has always been set in the past while Inifity Ward’s has been set in more current times. Of course, this made playing through each of their games a different experience, but after playing with current tech weapons and then going back to old bolt rifles the following year, it always felt like Treyarch was trying to play catch up.
That’s not the case this time around as the latest game in the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty Black Ops 2, is taking us into the future of 2025. The reveal trailer for the game is pretty action packed like you’d expect. Tons of explosions, and endless stream of gunfire, and advanced technology on par with Battlefield 2142. This is a pretty significant time gap from the original Black Ops title. So much that it doesn’t even really feel like a sequel and it actually feels like something new, which is something I never thought I’d say about the Call of Duty series.
At the start of the trailer we see Frank Woods from the original Black Ops title. Yes, the Frank Woods who we saw jump out a window and get blown up. There’s something about him surviving in the original Black Ops if you look for it. Woods is old, withered, and he knows that the situation couldn’t be worse. He seems to have a vital role in the game and may even be a mentor to your protagonist.
Don’t take my word for it though, check out the trailer below and enjoy the fresh batch of screenshots. Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is set to release on November 13th, 2012 on all major platforms.
