[UPDATE] Rumor: Microsoft Phasing Out Microsoft Points?

January 24, 2012, By Christian Davis

Update:Microsoft Switzerland has reportedly said that the rumor is not true. He said, “We can not confirm these rumors – we are currently satisfied with the current Xbox Live Business model.”

There’s a rumor going around that Microsoft’s currency  system is going to be “phased out”  by the end of 2012 according to a report on Inside Mobile Apps. If this turns out to be true Xbox LIVE is not only affected, but Zune Marketplace as well as Windows Phone users. Some may love this change and not have to worry about how much 406 Microsoft Points is in real currency. That’s not the only issue that arose with the point system though. Since the points system was introduced, there has always been the issue of having a strange amount of points left over of  that couldn’t be spent on anything. I’ve had this happen to me countless times.

Of course, there are those who do not feel comfortable putting their credit card information and the use of virtual currency was a life saver. It is after all, just a rumor and we’ll see what happens when the year comes to  close. It’s still pretty strange to think about the 360 without the Microsoft Points. What will happen if they make the change and you still have points left over? Will they reimburse you? Do they simply just vanish? Microsoft hasn’t said anything about the rumor but hopefully we’ll hear something about it soon.

What do you guys think about this decision? Let us know in the comments.
