Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Upgrade for Sony Ericsson Xperia Handsets in March 2012

So, here’s confirmation on something you wanted to know. Sony Ericsson will upgrade previous versions of their Xperia handsets to run on the newest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform. The company said the new feature will be available, starting March of 2012.

Sony Ericsson had come out with a video last week, showing an Xperia smartphone running on Ice Cream Sandwich platform.

The company has now explained that the entire units are busy, working on the merging of Xperia software with Android 4.0. It has been confirmed that they are will introduce the update from March 2012 for the Xperia, which was out in 2011.

In the initial phase, upgrade will be available only to Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray. Later, from end April or early May, Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, Xperia Mini and Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, Xperia Active as well as Sony Ericsson Live will get their upgrades.

The updates will be released in different phases, and will not be available to all models at once. The process will proceed according to a schedule the company has charted out.

As the first step, developers would combine the Xperia software with the new Android OS version. The next step would be approval from Sony’s partners.

Only after a series of such steps will the updated devices reach your hand.

Xperia smartphone owners will get a notification to download the software from Internet. They can download the software through their smartphones or via the PC.  So stay tuned to be notified. And, do not forget to tell us your experience once the update lands.
