OnLive Brings You Cloud-based Gaming through Android and iOS Apps

December 8, 2011, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Ardent gamers, check this out. OnLive has come up with an app that can transform your mobile phone into a gaming device.

So, get ready to play high-quality games like Assassins Creed Revelations and L.A. Noire on iPhone, iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Amazon Kindle Fire and many other Android devices.

The gaming service has optimized 20 games for touchscreen devices, and an additional 150 games will be playable using a new Universal OnLive Wireless Controller, which will be priced at $49.99. (Get it here.)

It is basically cloud gaming, which means you need not own a console or high-end gaming PC to play the games.

Gameplay is processed in the cloud and streamed over the internet, so devices need just a limited amount of power to enable engaging gaming experiences.

It works on WiFi, 4G LTE and even 3G networks. Should we explain? The average bandwidth required for TV or PC gaming about 1 Mbps to 5 Mbps, which isn’t much different from watching an HD movie on Netflix. Streams sent to mobile devices are even lower bandwidth, at about 0.5 to 2 Mbps.

OnLive earlier offered apps which let users watch other people play the games, but this new generation app lets the users play the games themselves.

Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder and CEO said that OnLive is now delivering the latest, console-class, top-tier games; literally to your fingertips – on tablets and phones for instant, on-demand play anywhere, anytime.

OnLive sure is expanding the big way. Mobile game developers, watch out.
