Modern Warfare 3 Smashes 5 Day Sales Record; Makes $775 Million

November 17, 2011, By Christian Davis

Modern Warfare 3 is now the most profitable piece of merchandise in entertainment history. From the franchise’s lucrative past, we knew the title would break another record and sell exceptionally well. Modern Warfare 3 has absolutely no signs of stopping especially now since it has broken the five day sales record yet again.

Recently held by Call of Duty: Black Ops with $650 Million, Modern Warfare 3 has accumulated $775 million dollars in as little as a full work week.  This has not only beat the videogame records but theatrical box office and books sales as well. Will any game beat that record aside from another Call of Duty? I wouldn’t count on it.

Along with the record breaking numbers, Microsoft informed us of some launch day stats that are just mind boggling. On launch day:

– More than 7 million hours were logged in which is 19% more than Black Ops’ launch day of 5.9 million.

– More than 3.3 million unique players logged onto Modern Warfare 3 on launch day, as opposed to Black Ops’ 2.6 million.

– On launch day, Modern Warfare 3 had 3.3 million players online simultaneously; setting a new Xbox LIVE record.

“With $775 million of sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in its first five days, Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for three consecutive years across all forms of entertainment,” said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard.  “Life-to-date retail sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded $6 billion worldwide, which makes Call of Duty one of the most valuable entertainment properties in the world.  We expect continued sales momentum, as reviews and audience enthusiasm suggest that this is the best Call of Duty game that we have ever made.  Online play for Modern Warfare 3 is at record levels and we continue to see high online play for both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which ranked as the #2 and #4 top-played Xbox LIVE games for the week of November 7, according to Major Nelson.”
