HTC Thunderbolt Android Gingerbread Update Now Rolling Out; Coming with New Desk Mode

October 27, 2011, By Leo Xavier

Although Ice Cream Sandwich is the one that everyone is wishing to taste, a Gingerbread update definitely won’t be ignored by all the lucky HTC Thunderbolt owners. The OTA update is now being pushed to the device.

The update appears to be coming with more than just the usual Gingerbread goodies. You are going to get a few other Sense goodies as well.

As you can see in the image posted below, the update will bring an all new “Desk Mode” which will allow you to enjoy Sense in the landscape mode, provided the device is docked.

This will indeed be a great surprise for all the Thunderbolt owners who were lucky enough to grab the official HTC dock from Verizon when it was launched in June.

Thanks to the new mode, Sense will look more like a tablet UI. The Desk mode displays content a little different than portrait mode. As you can see, the Friend Stream Widget and the Clock widget are now smaller and have been positioned in the upper corner instead of in the middle of the screen.

The new mode is currently only available when the device is docked. But we are quite sure that some ROM developers will crack it in the near future for allowing it to work without the dock.

And we know some of you are waiting eagerly for news on HTC’s ICS update. We will let you know when there is info available on that.

So, have you already got the update? How is that landscape mode doing?
