Android Slate Sales Post Tremendous Growth in Booming Tablet Market During Q3 of 2011

October 22, 2011, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

The tablet market is expanding, and many companies are seen as increasingly switching over to the Google Android operating system platform. As days pass, the competition in the tablet world is getting tougher. The recently revealed global tablet sales numbers stand testimony to this.

Studies conducted by Strategy Analytics show that tablet sales have almost increased four times compared with the previous year’s figures.

During the third quarter of 2010, the shipments were 4.4 million units, whereas they reached 16.7 million during the same period this year. That’s quite a jump!

As always, Apple sits on top of the ladder even after having a small reduction in the market share. The Cupertino-based company, which had a 95.5 percent share in 2010 had fallen to 66.6 percent share in the tablet market by 2011.

Considering the total market growth of 280 percent, Apple might have some relief even after suffering this loss.

The main gain in the tablet market was recorded by Android slates. The numbers show a tremendous increase, from the 2.3 percent during Q3 of 2010 to 26.9 percent this year.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has a 2.4 percent share by selling 400,000 tablets powered by their OS. In the case of BlackBerry, only 200,000 PlayBooks were sold during the period.

In the case of shipments of other OS tablets, the score stands at 500,000, in which HP’s Web OS has the majority.

Among Android powered tablets, Samsung and Acer continue to be the leading players, followed by Motorola and Asus.

During the third quarter of 2011, Android and Apple jointly lead with 93.5 percent of the market in their palms. The percent will only increase during the fourth quarter as the Amazon Kindle Fire has been released.

The bowing out of  HP from the market could also make the Android camp smile. If you are thinking of the price-slashed Playbook, we guess chances of a rise for the slate are very low.
