Sprint Unlimited Data Plan for iPhone 4 and 4S Could be Irksome for AT&T

The introduction of the Apple iPhone 4S has been seen by many carriers as a great opportunity to attract more new customers to their own networks. Many are planning different strategies at the moment, but no carrier has come out with a better data strategy than Sprint.

Sprint Nextel is the only carrier in the US to offer an unlimited data plan on the iPhone for new users.

This plan will indeed become a big threat to the other carriers (AT&T and Verizon) that will be carrying both the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.

As you might know, AT&T is currently not interested in the idea of unlimited data. This could easily drive dissatisfied AT&T customers to make the switch to Sprint who seems to be confident that their unlimited data plan will be a major draw for customers.

Latest info suggests that almost one quarter of new Sprint customers made the switch to the carrier because they were dissatisfied with the previous carrier. The reason for 12% of those customers is “additional services” which includes the data plan.

But you should know that carrier loyalty is very high in the US. According to data made available by  Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, only 7% of AT&T customers abandoned the network over the past year.

And a very little percentage of the customers left the carrier to go for the iPhone 4 when it launched on Verizon earlier this year.

At the moment, the biggest opportunity for Sprint is to sell the new iPhone to its current customers, 51% of which could soon be ready for an upgrade as their contracts have lasted for 18 months or more.
