October 6, 2011, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

They have been colleagues, founders of world’s most innovative companies, and fierce competitors in the race to become the best in the world of technology. Nevertheless, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were good friends.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates released a statement, lamenting the death of his co-pirate of the Silicon Valley.

Pointing out that they are truly saddened to learn of the death of Steve Jobs, Gates and his wife Melinda extended their sincere condolences to Steve’s friends and family, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.

The world recognizes Steve Jobs’ passion and innovation, so does Bill Gates, who met him first nearly thirty years ago and had been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half their lives.

Gates said the world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.

Setting business and rivalry aside, Gates said in his statement that for those who were lucky enough to work with Steve, it has been an insanely great honor. He added he misses Steve immensely.

So will the world.
